Blue Hope Conservation Roundtable – ensuring post-COVID-19 plans contribute to ocean protection.

On World Oceans Day 2020, Join Dr. Sylvia Earle, founder of Mission Blue, and Teresa Ribera, the Minister for the Ecological Transition of Spain, for a discussion on World Oceans Day about the future of ocean conservation policy as the world looks at emerging from the COVID-19 pandemic. The live webinar will be moderated by Max Bello, Advisor, Global Ocean Policy for Mission Blue.

While governments worldwide are shaping post-COVID19 recovery plans, ocean protection targets should not be watered down. Reinforced action is also needed for the conservation of the biodiversity of marine and coastal ecosystems.

At the international stage, with the postponement to 2021 of COP26 of UNFCC and COP15 of CBD, there is a risk of losing political momentum at a time when climate ambition and biodiversity protection are more important than ever.

Oceans play a key role in mitigating climate change but they are also one of the most vulnerable ecosystems regarding the rising of global temperature.

Limiting the increase in global average temperature to 1.5ºC is crucial for the ocean and this target can only be achieved through increased ambition in Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) in 2020.

Specifically, the dialogue will address the following topics:

1. What are the key challenges to integrating new ocean conservation policy into post-COVID19 recovery plans?
2. Which are the main barriers for its implementation?
3. COP26 on Climate Change and COP15 of CBD have been postponed to 2021. How do we maintain focus to achieve the level of ambition needed to tackle the climate emergency?
