Corona, Disability & Climate Change

This is a discussion about the areas of disability, corona & climate change & our need to prepare. It is hosted by Marcalee Alexander, MD physiatrist & founder of the Sustain Our Abilities Channel.

Cabell Eames is a lifelong advocate for racial, social, & economic justice. Having grown up in Richmond, VA amidst Big Tobacco & the chemical industry, she knows first-hand the importance of corporate accountability & environmental justice & recently filed a bill for ingredient transparency. She also supports Medicare for All, a program that would have eased her childhood spent battling for her mother’s care for Multiple Sclerosis & prevented her untimely death. Cabell is currently the legislative and political manager for 350 Massachusetts, a grassroots climate organization, & is working to ensure the boldest & most aggressive climate policies are passed before it’s too late.

Margaret (Peg) Nosek, PhD, is a Professor in the Department of Physical Med & Rehab at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, TX & the founder and Executive Director of the Center for Research on Women with Disabilities (CROWD). Her initial research targeted independence & community integration of people with disabilities; however, in the early 1990s, she began to devote her energy to improving the health of women with physical disabilities, especially by developing interventions to address disparities in reproductive health & access to healthcare services. Currently, she is testing online virtual worlds as a medium for reaching socially & geographically isolated women. Peg has personal knowledge of disasters, having experienced many hurricanes on a ventilator due to lifelong spinal muscular atrophy.

Elizabeth Treston is a retired speech language pathologist, who sustained an SCI 40 years ago. She has personal experience living through Superstorm Sandy in her home in Long Beach, NY. She is a member of the American Planning Association & the International Association of Emergency Managers (IAEM). She led the efforts to form the Long Beach Community Organizations Active in Disasters (LB COAD), coordinating rebuilding programs for families and mental health outreach for children and she volunteers with Canine Companions for Independence.

The purpose of the Sustain Our Abilities Channel is to provide an online resource for people living with disabilities to receive & share information about successful living. Future plans include Q&A shows, interactive groups & educational programming for health care professionals regarding disability concerns. Our values are inclusivity & accessibility. Thus, we want our programming to be available to everyone, around the world. We need your help to do this & are looking for volunteers in all areas & with various forms of expertise. To volunteer, receive further information or to provide a video to post about your experiences related to living with a disability, please email sustainourabilities@gmail.com.
