Deforestation & Direct Harvesting

Direct harvesting means to take a species out of it’s environment. We need to directly harvest organisms for resources that support our population. However, overfishing and the use of drift nets has threatened aquatic biodiversity. Likewise, we’ve hunted and poached endangered animals to the point of near extinction.
Deforestation is the removal of trees from stable ecosystems. Sometimes we are directly harvesting trees for wood. Trees can grow back over time through the process of ecological succession. But sometimes, we are simply clearing the land to repurpose it. When land is repurposed, ecosystems are lost. As human population continues to grow, we continue to repurpose land for agriculture and housing.
