???????? EIGHTH ONLINE STRIKE FOR THE CLIMATE ????????
Today I want to talk about plastic.
The so-called Pacific Trash Vortex or Great Pacific Garbage Patch has formed in the middle of the Pacific Ocean in recent years. Basically it is a huge accumulation of floating garbage (mainly composed of plastic). Its extent is not known precisely: the estimates range from 700,000 km² to more than 10 million km² (i.e. from a larger area of the Iberian Peninsula to a larger area of the United States surface), i.e. between 0.41% and 5.6% of the Pacific Ocean. The effects on the environment have not yet been studied in depth and appear difficult to evaluate given the extent of the phenomenon and the associated time scales, but they are probably important. However, most of these materials are toxic and are ingested by marine species that live in the Pacific. This leads to the death of thousands of species and those that survive are brought to our dishes full of harmful microplastics.
Are you still wondering why avoid disposable plastic?????????
