Good news! Because words matter, the @guardian (UK newspaper) updated its glossary in 2019 in regards with environmental news.
.
All journalists and editors are now expected to follow the new guidelines when referring to the following terms:
.
“Climate change” is replaced by “Climate emergency” or “Climate crisis” to reflect the seriousness of the situation.
.
“Climate sceptic” is replaced by “Climate science denier” or “Climate denier” because this is a not a debate anymore, it is a scientific fact.
.
“Global warming” is replaced by “global heating” as it is more accurate.
.
“Carbon emissions” is replaced by “greenhouse gas emissions” because carbon is not only gas to heat the atmosphere (methane, etc.)
.
“Fish stocks” is replaced by “Fish populations” because fish play a vital role in the ecosystem of the oceans.
.
“Biodiversity” is replaced by “Wildlife” because it is a more accessible word, less vague when talking about all the creatures with whom we share the planet.
.
This might seem as small changes, but words matter, they can be a powerful weapon to fight for the environment!
