We are in a climate (& health) emergency, and yet our defence spending continues to increase even though this contributes to the environmental crisis we all face.
This series of 3 live streams, happening a week apart, will explore 3 diverse perspectives focusing on the topic ‘The Silent Victim’: how conflict affects the environment. Hear from a scientist, a community worker and a veteran, and learn the how, what and WHY demilitarisation is an essential part of saving our planet!

In this video, ???????????????? ???????????????? explains the complexities of post-war rebuilding when both infrastructure and the environment have been used as a tool for conflict. He was the director of the International Coalition to Ban Uranium Weapons, and recently founded ‘The Conflict and Environment Observatory’ (Ceobs). This ground-breaking organisation is the first of its kind to look exclusively at the environmental impacts of armed conflicts. They work to make sure the impact is documented and addressed, and that those affected are helped. The organisation has received UN funding, and produced extensive reports on the ‘hidden victim’ of the world’s current large-scale conflicts. These include Afghanistan, Colombia, Iraq, Libya, Occupied Palestinian Territories, Syria, Ukraine and Yemen. Doug will speak about how preventing environmental warfare is critical in the age of climate emergency, exploring the overlap between movements for peace and environmental sustainability. He will tell us about the aims and objectives of the observatory, and how governments and environmental activists must recognise the effects of conflict in their campaigns for a zero-carbon and sustainable future.
