Introduction to Comparative Planetology. Lecture by Lukáš Likavčan

In his lecture “Introduction to Comparative Planetology”, Likavčan draws from his recent publication by Strelka Press, where he introduced a philosophical genre providing an intertwined analysis of visual cultures of imagining the Earth and geopolitics of climate emergency. This lecture aims to update the five figures of comparative planetology – the Planetary, the Globe, the Terrestrial, Earth-without-us and Spectral Earth – in response to the recent experiences with global pandemics, while crafting a narrative specifically suited for Russian audience. Each of these figures function simultaneously as visual paradigms, geopolitical regimes and design briefs. The lecture thus presents comparative planetology as a cosmological exercise which seeks to become one of the navigational tools for plotting an escape plan out of the impasse of modernity.

Lukáš Likavčan — a researcher and theorist, writing on philosophy of technology, political ecology and visual cultures. He teaches at Center for Audiovisual Studies FAMU in Prague, and at The Terraforming programme at Strelka Institute for Media Architecture and Design in Moscow.
