LLS Webinar 5 – Laudato Si' Schools Towards Ecological Citizenship

Education plays a vital role in empowering citizens in caring for the environment. The increasing complexities of environmental degradation and the climate emergency the world is facing requires a learning approach that goes beyond the boundaries of the classroom.

Join speakers from University of Santo Tomas’ Simbahayan Community Development Office, Ateneo de Davao University’s Ecoteneo, Miriam College’s Environmental Studies Institute; University of San Jose-Recoletos /Arcores Filipinas, De La Salle University-Dasmariñas, and Green Convergence Philippines.

Schools must prepare and implement a broadening of the goals and perspectives of environmental education. Impacts and actions must be assessed not just through the scientific, economic, and social lens, but also from moral and ethical perspectives.

Pope Francis calls for an environmental education aimed at creating an “ecological citizenship”. The changing climate of today necessitates this culture of duty for the common good, with active political participation and an emphasis on social justice.

It involves a restoration and strengthening of relationships with God, with nature, and with other life on Earth. Schools serve as the ideal venue for building this culture of ecological citizenship for a more sustainable world for current and future generations.
