Perspectives on a Sustainable Recovery from COVID-19

Sustainability was at the top of the agenda for many businesses at the start of this year. Last year, the Government legislated for net-zero emissions by 2050 and declared a climate emergency. Across the globe, many parliaments began to take similar steps. 2020 was expected to be the year of climate action. Momentum was building: business leaders were increasingly focussing on ESG (environmental, social and governance) issues; and pressure to improve sustainability credentials was coming from all stakeholders – employees, investors and customers alike.

However in recent months, managing the COVID-19 crisis has understandably taken centre stage as businesses have focussed on ensuring the safety and wellbeing of their colleagues and taken all steps that they can to continue trading. But as we see glimpses of lockdown being lifted, there is increasing discussion as to whether sustainability and environmental factors will continue to stay on the agenda and if so, what might green growth look like and how might businesses respond to new opportunities as our environment and society evolves?

For many businesses and institutions, we expect sustainability will be much more than a compliance issue and it is likely to become ingrained in their business model. Whatever your current position, there are opportunities now to ‘reset’ and consider how your business can be better aligned to sustainability goals.

ThinkHouse is starting a series of monthly webinars to help you consider how to manage the risks and opportunities in the emerging green economy. Join us for our first webinar in this new series of sustainability-focused events. Michael Luckman, co-chair of ThinkHouse, is joined by partners Ben Stansfield and Gareth Baker to discuss the policy and regulatory drivers for businesses to reduce emissions, adapt to the effects of climate change, and to best position themselves for a sustainable recovery.

During the webinar we discuss the legislative steps taken by Government to hit the net-zero target so far and share our views on what may come next and where that may present opportunities as well as pitfalls.
