_________________________________________________________

My name is Steve Francis, I’m Moderator of the Uniting Church in Western Australia.

I stand here representing all the faith communities of Western Australia and with my brother from the Islamic community.

I am here because I want to say that we believe that the Earth is sacred.
We are called to care for this Earth, to look after it, to be responsible caretakers of what God has given us.

We stand here behind this beautiful ocean, and we think of the peoples of the ocean. Particularly of the Pacific and many of those people are people of faith. And we are seeing a rise in the water level, they are seeing a depletion of their fishing stocks, they are seeing their islands disappear.

We are seeing the emergence of environmental refugees and it’s time for action.

It’s time for our Government to move quicker and more certainly to reduce emissions, to reduce our carbon footprint, to reduce our reliance on fossil fuel and to develop a much more aggressive plan towards a total use of sustainable energy.

So we are here today because we believe in a God who cares for the planet, we believe in a great science that is available to us – that tells us we must act.

We believe in hope, there is still time for us but we believe that this is an emergency and we must act and stand together as an expression of loving our neighbour, and caring for this planet, and acting together as one people – together.

Thank you.
