Royal Commission into summer's bushfires ‘at risk of being a complete waste of time’

Sky News host Chris Kenny says it has been worrying and “depressingly predictable” that the public hearings of the royal commission into the summer’s bushfires started with the topic of climate change.

On Monday, the royal commission into Australia’s bushfire crisis commenced after hearing its first witness give evidence on the impact of climate change on the bushfire season.

Dr Karl Braganza spoke about how climate change contributed to the devastating bushfires, saying two major weather events impacted Australia directly.

Mr Kenny said the royal commission’s climate focus “is a waste of time, a waste of energy and a needless sop to the political agitators”.

“What we need from this commission is a focus on what we can control,” Mr Kenny said.

He said the lessons “we’ve always known” must instead be addressed, namely “keeping fuel loads down in critical areas, ensuring homeowners make their properties safe, making sure planners impose safe separation between bushland and settlements and improving communications and evacuation plans”.

“Unless we get strong recommendations on these issues, the royal commission will be a waste of time”.
