Spilling the tea on COVID-19 and the Climate Crisis. What can we learn?⠀
.⠀
So I finished my qualifying exams this week and passed! Given current events, I got a few questions about the pandemic and the climate crisis and the question above was my favorite, so I thought I’d share my answer with you. At this point, we don’t know enough to predict how our world will change because of #covid19, but we can draw some conclusions to the #climatecrisis based on the pandemic response. .
1) I don’t ever want to hear “how will we pay for it ever again?” The US government authorized $1.5 trillion in loans to businesses to stabilize the stock market and then $2 trillion in stimulus for Americans. Where did that money come from? Probably the same place we get money to pay for wars ????????‍♀️. My point is- money is never truly an issue when the issue is a priority- we don’t pay for lots of things in this country. Not “paying” for a Green New Deal is very much an option especially when you consider GND policies an investment in our future- one that will drive revenue through job creation and new tech. ⠀
.⠀
2) Related to all the new money we found- the difference in the response to the stock market and the relief for average Americans was glaring to me. There was no hesitation in injecting $1.5 trillion to stabilize markets, while Americans are only getting a one-time payment of $1200. Yes, there was money for unemployment insurance and changes to student loan payments but these concessions were haggled over, and is nothing compared to the type of stability other nations are providing for their citizens. ⠀
.⠀
The implication is clear: when the climate crisis begins to severely effect the economy- the stock market, preserving the status quo will be the priority- and we can see this now! Climate resilience plans prioritize propping up real estate values not building capacity within communities.
.
We need to stay vigilant in the decisions that are being made in the name of our protection. Anyways- please vote in Nov & stay safe and sane!
