1/3 of the Earth’s surface is forested area. So consider this: In Finland, a small nation of 5 1/2 million people, forest coverage is 75% of the land area, well over twice the global figure for a single nation. That’s because despite agriculture and deforestation, their 2,306 million cubic meters of forestry is actually growing more and more each year.
How, you say? What is this riddle? It’s not a riddle, it’s sustainable development in action. And in Finland it’s been this way for over a hundred years. Here, destruction of forestry was prohibited in 1886, to the extent that when woods are felled for industrial purposes, new trees must be planted within five years of felling. Not only this, but because the wood and pulp industry is so important to Finland, 150 million trees are planted here each year.
#SustainableForestry has three main objectives for it to work: One, ecological carrying capacity must never fall below previous levels, so the environment in effect can only be altered within a means to recover itself from the change. Two, social and cultural values of forestry must not be reduced, allowing for indigenous rights to hold court on land use. And three, forestry must be economically viable for all parties. Ecologically, socially and economically sustainable raw wood materials for forest and pulp industry CAN be harvested with #climatechange and #globalwarming in mind. All it takes is a little bit of help from governments creating and ENFORCING climate laws.
