What does “hope” mean to you?
On many days, I don’t have much hope. The chances of truly turning everything around to mitigate the worst possible outcomes of #climatechange and ecological breakdown are dwindling.
In my research, I constantly come across the theme of social collapse – people are terrified of it. I think that right now, we’re only getting a glimpse of what’s to come. Food shortages, isolation, people afraid to leave their houses. And knowing that it’s going to get much worse gives me a responsibility to act. This is why I joined @extinctionrebellion a year ago.
This picture was taken on Waterloo bridge (credits @thelightscaper), which we had transformed to a garden bridge. It was here where I discovered something I had considered lost – hope.
The April rebellion was one of the best human experiences I’ve ever had. It showed me the true value of community, cooperation and vulnerability. It opened so many doors, both in my life and within myself. And showed me that I am capable of so much more than I thought. That the action I take as an individual is invaluable within the web of collective action.
Today, hope has taken on a new meaning – from a passive quality to an active practice which starts anew every day. Hope is action, hope is change, hope is transformation. Hope is the realisation that you are having an impact, in everything you do, however small.
I can’t believe it has already been a year since all this started – it has been the richest, most empowering, and craziest in my life so far. Thank you to everyone who walked with me on this incredible journey. Thank you, XR. @xrebellionuk @xrlondon @xr.haringey ????????????
