Who knew a petition with 16,000 Canadian signatures on it could cause such a stir?! Greenpeace Canada went to the Australian High Commission (embassy) in Ottawa today to deliver your petition in solidarity with Australian bushfire survivors. This was part of a peaceful worldwide protest demanding the Australian government #ActOnClimate, phase-out coal.
Just as we were delivering the petition with 16,000 Canadian signatures on it, staff at the embassy locked the doors and called security! Not exactly what we were expecting and the team was escorted out of the building. Everyone is OK and CBC radio Canada caught the whole thing. You can check on our Facebook page to watch the Facebook live videos we took, both French and English.
So they locked us out today, but don’t worry – WE’LL BE BACK ✊ our campaigners are currently reassessing and planning how we will deliver the petition.
A huge thank you to the campaigners and volunteers who helped out today, uniting Canadian voices with all the others worldwide who are calling on the Australian government to act on the #ClimateEmergency NOW.
