Climate Change and Apple Production in the Himalayas

Apple cultivation in the #kinnaur district of #himachalpradesh faces challenges due to climatic changes. Farmers in the neighbouring districts have already faced a major loss of livelihood due to seasonal changes.
Farmers at the lower altitudes are planning to shift their farms to higher elevations. In contrast, #farmers at higher elevations are growing new orchards due to more stability and less seasonal variability. This is one indicator of #climatechange in the Himalayan region.
Considering that both exposure and risk are high in the Himalayan region, the key to reducing the vulnerability is the improvement of the adaptive capacity of the farmers by strengthening early warning systems, insurance for apple trees and alternate livelihood options.
