Recent climate change news reveals that an ice shelf as big as Rome has collapsed in East Antarctica due to an extraordinary heatwave. Temperatures have soared 40 degrees higher than normal in some areas. It has arrived at the same time as an Arctic heatwave and another coral bleaching event on the Great Barrier Reef. These events have left previously cautious climate scientists shocked at the rapid rate of climate change over the polar regions.
Earth’s Poles have opposite weather at any time of the year, with the South Pole now currently going into winter, and the North Pole coming out of it. This year, however, both poles are experiencing ground-breaking record temperatures, simultaneously melting, causing alarm among scientists all over the world.
In a report presented at the world’s largest earth science conference, researchers revealed that the ice shelf on the Thwaites Glacier could collapse in just a few years. The Florida-sized glacier in West Antarctica, nicknamed the Doomsday Glacier, is currently holding back enough ice to raise sea levels around the world by 10 feet. A new study found its safeguards could collapse in as little as three to five years. Researchers say a floating section at the front of Thwaites Glacier, which until now has been relatively stable, could “shatter like a car windscreen”. It is already dumping 50 billion tonnes of ice into the ocean each year. Meanwhile, in Siberia, the highest temperature ever recorded in the Arctic (38C or 100F) has been officially confirmed, sounding “alarm bells” over the rapidly accelerating pace of changing climate.
