Critiquing the Climate Change Bill 2022 at Senate Hearing: the IPA's Daniel Wild and Morgan Begg

IPA Deputy Director Daniel Wild and IPA Director of Legal Rights Program Morgan Begg share IPA research on net zero with the Senate Standing Environment and Communications Legislation Committee. The Bill could cost Australia $100 billion in foregone development and 175,000 future jobs.

The main points they raise are:
1. The government’s climate legislation will invite a torrent of legal activism by fringe environmental groups.
2. The government’s climate legislation will impose significant and irreparable economic damage and significant job losses, with regional Australians the hardest hit.
3. The government’s climate legislation will put even further upward pressure on rapidly rising electricity prices.
4. The government’s climate legislation contains a ‘rachet clause’ which risks ceding parliamentary authority to international organisations through further embedding the Paris Climate Agreement into domestic laws.
5. The government’s climate legislation contains measures which are not supported by the majority of Australians.
