On Friday, California Governor Gavin Newsom signed multiple bills into law that proponents say should help mitigate climate change as well as protect public health.
California lawmakers passed the legislation in the final weeks of the 2021-22 session. Legislators say the new laws will “help the state move towards a healthier future powered by clean energy rather than fossil fuels.”
The new laws include setting a goal for 90% of the state’s electricity to come from clean sources by 2035, prohibiting new oil drilling within 3,200 feet of the places where Californians live, work, eat, shop, worship and go to school as well as setting goals for removing global-warming carbon from our air and putting the state on track for carbon neutrality by 2045.
