The East Coast of the United States was devastated by a winter storm called “Snowmageddon” or “Snowpocalypse” in February 2010. The storm brought blizzard conditions to the Washington, D.C., area and broke snowfall records for the mid-Atlantic region. Another historic and catastrophic snowfall, dubbed “Snowzilla,” slammed the mid-Atlantic region in January 2016. Snowfall totals in Baltimore, Maryland, Washington, D.C., New York City, New York, and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania reached 0.3-0.9 meters, breaking records. In January 2019, a polar vortex plunged the U.S. Midwest into Arctic conditions. Despite the fact that winters are getting shorter and global temperatures are rising, extreme weather events like these are expected to become more intense as a result of climate change. Blizzards are a deadly form of winter storm characterised by high winds, snow, and poor visibility. Blizzard conditions are defined by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) as winds of more than 56 kilometers per hour (35 miles per hour) with either falling or blowing snow that reduces visibility to 0.4 kilometers (0.25 miles) or less for at least three hours. Blizzards happen when snow falls in windy conditions or when strong winds lift snow from the ground. Some blizzards can create whiteout conditions, making it impossible to distinguish between the sky and the ground. A review of all studies published between 1991 and 2011 expressing a position on human-caused global warming found that 97 percent of research studies published agreed that climate change is real and is driven by human activity, most notably the usage of fossil fuels. When fossil fuels like gas, coal, and oil are used, they emit significant amounts of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. Carbon dioxide is an example of a greenhouse gas, which allows the sun’s heat to reach Earth and then trap it in the atmosphere. When greenhouse gases are present in sufficient quantities, they help to keep the Earth warm enough to support life. However, the release of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere by humans causes global temperatures to rise, a phenomenon known as global warming. Average global temperatures have already risen by roughly 0.8°C (1.4°F) in the last century, and they are predicted to rise further if no action is taken to lower greenhouse gas levels in the atmosphere. Although the Earth’s temperature has experienced warmer and cooler eras throughout history, the current rate of warming considerably outpaces that of previous millennia.
