The Little Orange Dinghy – Educating Children about Climate Change

The Little Orange Dinghy
Written by Paul Webb
Illustrated by Kellie McGinley-Smith

Foreword
Paul is the proud Author of “Becoming an Energy Expert”, along with other titles, teaching energy management to the masses.

His aim with ‘The Little Orange Dinghy’ is to teach the next generation about the resources around us, predominately the wind, sun and the water.

This book was written back in 1994, whilst Paul was attending adult education. English was not his favourite subject, therefore he went back to school to re-educate himself as he felt that his career was suffering due to his reading and writing not being of a good enough standard.

Since then, Paul has written several books around ‘Energy Management’ all of which are centred around educating people regarding saving energy. It is his dream to educate the next generation of ‘energy managers’ and to teach them about the world’s resources.

It is his dream and legacy to leave behind ‘words’ that fulfill people’s happiness and teaches the next generation through ‘story’.

About the Illustrator

Paul met Kellie through his mentoring of Staff Sergeant Lee Pickersgill. He had sent the book to Lee who declared the book made him cry. Paul then decided he had to publish this book. Kellie’s husband and Lee both served in the UK Army in Afghanistan where sadly they lost one of their fellow team.

Kellie would argue she was born an artist and can never remember it not being a part of her. Studying art in college was only ever a therapy and passion for her and would have to remain that way until her children were older as she was a busy mum of four and wife to a soldier, accompanying him from station to station. Kellie decided in 2019 to make it her full-time job and took on the title of artist and grandmother!

For Kellie, the greatest part of being an artist is being infinitely inspired in some way and putting it on paper, which was made easy once reading Paul’s story and conjuring up the art work for the ‘little orange dinghy’.

When the introductions were made, Kellie found Paul’s words powerful in the sense that he touches upon the importance of energy and our planet. His excitement for this topic was evident in their discussion and influenced the imagery, where he took pleasure in sharing her visions. ”

The Little Orange Dinghy

It was a beautiful Sunday Afternoon. The Sun was out and there was very little wind. We were all lined up and ready to go. I flapped my sails at my mother who was moored by the side.

Bang!

The canon started the race with the sun reflecting in my eyes. We were racing towards the sea, to our first point. Around the buoy and onto the next, with the wind whistling around my mast.

To my surprise I was in front, I could feel the sun burning on to my sails. The sea was like a mill pond, calm and forgiving. By the second buoy, I was still in front, no one contending. I had one lap and the race would be mine.

In the distance white horses were charging towards me as the wind increased its speed.
Suddenly it was dark.

The wind unexpectedly changed my direction and when I looked behind me, I was on my own and lost.

It began to rain. My orange sails flapped rapidly in the increasing wind. The wind was strong and blowing me off course, I could not fight it.

A large wave hit my side and a gust forced me over. It was a long time that I was on my side, before I managed to right myself.

Lightning struck my mast, my sails were ripped apart.
The storm started and there was a long loud bang and then silence. I felt tired and sad, and began to cry myself to sleep.

When I woke, it had stopped raining and the wind had settled. I did not know how long I had been asleep. The sound of the waves lapping against my side was the only noise I could hear.
I could then feel the sun on my back, and my sails began to dry.

A warm breeze began to rise. It started to push me in a direction which I had little control over. I found myself going faster and faster, though I did not feel scared. The wind had its firm grip around me.

The wind accelerated to a high speed, and then as if by magic, it stopped and set me free. Blue skies began to surround me again and in the distance, a familiar sight.

As I approached this beautiful site, I could hear a noise. It sounded like cheering. Yes, I was home and the cheering had increased, not because I had won, but because I was home.
